Emerald City Knights
Psychic with the ability to temporarily give baddies Cerebral Palsy
Even though his powers come from an accident, I used the “In-Born Talent” stats because his background would have him starting very physically weak.
Telepathy: Mind Reading 5 Linked to Area Mental Communication 3 • 25 points
Mental Paralysis: Perception Range Cumulative Affliction 6 (Resisted by Will; Dazed, Stunned, Paralyzed) • 24 points
[I still don’t understand how the arrays work, so I’m not certain whether I need to pick a second mentalist power, or somehow add modifications to this power]
Precognitive Reactions: Enhanced Advantages 8 (Defensive Roll 4, Evasion 2, Improved Defense, Improved Initiative); Enhanced Defenses 12 (Dodge 6, Parry 6) • 20 points
Mental Awareness: Senses (Mental Awareness, Acute, Detect, Radius, Range) • 5 points
DODGE PARRY FORTITUDE TOUGHNESS WILL
+6 +4 +5 +0 +8
Abilities 36 Skills 12 Powers 76 Defenses 23 Advantages 3 Total 150
[Need to figure out how to make the complications work for character concept]
[[I went over your character and it looks good. Here’s the stat block that Hero Lab outputs.]]
Aamir Kapoor – PL 10
Strength 0, Stamina 1, Agility 1, Dexterity 2, Fighting 0, Intellect 4, Awareness 6, Presence 4
Defensive Roll 4, Evasion 2, Improved Defense, Improved Initiative, Inspire 2, Teamwork
Expertise: Choose One 4 (+ 8), Insight 8 (+ 14), Perception 8 (+ 14), Persuasion 4 (+ 8)
[[You only had one of two skill packages selected, so I added the Dabbler one to the mix, as it seemed most appropriate.]]
- Mental Awareness: Senses 5 (Acute: Mental, Detect: Mental 2: ranged, Radius: Mental, Ranged: Mental)
- Mentalist Array
- Psychic Paralysis: Cumulative Affliction 6 (1st degree: Dazed, 2nd degree: Stunned, 3rd degree: Paralyzed, Resisted by: Will, DC 16; Cumulative, Increased Range 2: perception)
- Alternate Effect 1
- Alternate Effect 2
[[From the Quickstart Generator, two alternate effects are included, so you may roll for, or pick two more powers for the array.]]
- Precognitive Reactions: Enhanced Trait 20 (Traits: Dodge + 6 (+ 13), Parry + 6 (+ 10), Advantages: Defensive Roll 4, Evasion 2, Improved Defense, Improved Initiative)
- Telepathy: Mental Communication: Mental Area Communication 3 (Linked; Area) Mind Reading: Mind Reading 5 (Linked; DC 15)
Grab, +0 (DC Spec 10)
Mind Reading: Mind Reading 5 (DC Will 15)
Psychic Paralysis: Cumulative Affliction 6 (DC Will 16)
Throw, +2 (DC 15)
Unarmed, +0 (DC 15)
- Disability: Aamir has severe cerebral palsy, which has been “cured” by the Silver Storm. However, when he overextends his new powers, his reserve of psychic energy can run out, and his condition reasserts itself.
[[This is the simplest way to do it. When I feel it’s appropriate, I give you a Hero Point, and your CP flares up and complicates things]]
Stormer: Aamir gained his powers from the Silver Storm.
[[Everyone who gets their powers from the Silver Storm has this Complication.]]
Dodge 13/7, Parry 10/4, Fortitude 6, Toughness 5/1, Will 14
Abilities 36 + Powers 74 (76 once the two alternate effects are chosen.) + Advantages 3 + Skills 12 (24 ranks) + Defenses 23 = 148/150 with the two Alternate Effects chosen.
Aamir Kapoor is the eldest son of Atul and Bina Kapoor, first-generation immigrants from India. They moved to Emerald City, and bought a small gas station. Living frugally, they prospered enough to buy a second, and they were saving to buy a house and live the American Dream — then Aamir was born. He had very serious cerebral palsy, couldn’t walk, and had difficulty even sitting in a wheelchair.
They got Aamir the best medical care and special education they could afford, but it was very difficult. Over the years, they had to sell their second gas station as the bills piled up, and they struggled immensely.
As he got older, they realized there was no way they could continue to afford to take care of him … and then there was the question of his younger sister Anoo. What good Indian family would want to marry a girl with this in her family? Even if CP is not genetic, who would marry this girl knowing that eventually they would have to take care of her severely disabled older brother?
So, they made a heart-wrenching decision. They couldn’t take him back to India, where his life with CP would be hellish, but since he was a natural-born American, they could return to India themselves with Anoo, and put Aamir on disability so he would at least be cared for in the American medical system. The week of his 18th birthday, they did just that, and since then he has only gotten a letter from his mother each year on his birthday, long rambling letters that update him on the family news, and have heartfelt pleas begging his forgiveness for abandoning him. In truth, Aamir understands what they did, but he does not write back because he knows he has to keep his existence a secret until after his sister Anoo marries.
For the last 8 years, Aamir has lived in Shady Glade Nursing home, one of only a handful of non-elderly people there. He has no education or special skills beyond high school, and his cultural tastes tend to run toward TV and music favored by the elderly, since that’s what everyone in Shady Glade watches. The one exception is his love for comic books. They lay flat, and the pages are easy for him to turn, so he has pored over superhero comics his whole life, favoring the disabled heroes like Professor X.
Then, one day, he was part of a small group touring the WHATEVER FACILITY when he got caught up in the Silver Storm. When he awoke, he was somehow partially cured of his cerebral palsy, and whatever changes the Silver Storm had done to his brain had apparently given him other powers as well. In truth, Aamir only acknowledges the telepathy and ability to paralyze others with CP — he’s so unfamiliar with what normal reaction times feel like that he legitimately doesn’t realize he has Precognitive Reactions and super-human Mental Awareness; he just assumes every normal person perceives in this way, though over time he may come to realize his abilities are special.
Aamir is finally able to live his dreams and be a superhero, but since he doesn’t really understand the full extent of his powers, he doesn’t really see himself as a full-fledged hero, but rather more of a support member of the group — better than a sidekick, but not to the full level of the “real” heroes of the group. He’ll be relentlessly positive, always encouraging the team to work together.
With no education or marketable skills, Aamir is still technically a patient living on disability at the Shady Glade Nursing Home. Since he is fully-abled now, instead of living like a patient, he has taken on the job of an orderly, working for free, wearing the white orderly uniform, changing bedpans and helping out his elderly friends. If anyone from the team sees him working as an orderly at Shady Glade, they may be struck by how he doesn’t really treat the other patients with compassionately, but rather as a peer, with no patronizing at all. If they pay close attention, they may realize his interactions with the elderly and disabled denizens of Shady Glade are almost exactly the same as his with the super team — as a group of peers all striving together to make things better.
Somehow, I want a complication where when Aamir’s power “runs out,” he temporarily reverts back to his full CP state. Since there doesn’t appear to be any kind of “mana” system for the game, perhaps we could say that if he reaches a certain point of damage, or perhaps has “deblitated abilities,” it happens? Or perhaps any time he’s unconscious it happens, but it takes a certain amount of time for him to recover?
Shady Glade has exercise facilities (for rehab not a real black iron gym), and Aamir has to work out daily just to get his muscles to the strength of a regular person. 26 years of disuse don’t disappear overnight.
He has been harboring a crush on one of the young nurses for a few years, Taylor Swanson, who is pretty in a girl-next-door sort of way, but was the only young woman he had regular contact with. Now that he can shave himself, dress himself, and comb his own hair, he’s actually handsome, but his whole life the idea of finding a girlfriend was so out of reach that he is completely unable to let Taylor know how he feels, so he continues to harbor a secret crush.
He also has a passive understanding of Bengali language, and in a pinch could probably manage to get out a simple sentence in Bengali if the situation ever arose.
